ebrary’s Technology

Get ebrary Reader ebrary has developed a powerful system that cost effectively and efficiently creates highly interactive, online databases of content.

Key features and benefits include the following:
  • Flexible Business Rules – ebrary’s platform supports a variety of business models such as subscription, pay-per-view, copy/print, etc., giving organizations control over their intellectual property. Business rules can be applied to individual documents or sets of documents.
  • Word-level Interaction – ebrary Reader and InfoTools™ gives PDF documents a higher level of interactivity than HTML. Users can automatically link to additional resources, products and services by selecting words or phrases within the PDF document as well as search within and across documents. With ebrary, there is no need to convert existing PDF files to HTML or other file format or manually create hyperlinks.
  • Document Streaming – In addition to providing download capabilities, our technology enables documents to be streamed, serving one page at a time vs. the entire document. This enables organizations to distribute their existing PDF files to broad audiences regardless of file size.
  • Real Time Reporting Tools – ebrary logs each user interaction with a document at the page and transaction level, which provides organizations with key data about their customers and how documents are viewed and used.
  • High performance document submission and management tools – ebrary’s automated document submission process supports any PDF file.
  • Fast and accurate transaction accounting and reporting services – ebrary’s platform handles payments and records usage. Payment options include credit cards, subsidy accounts, and a variety of subscription-based models.
  • Integration with existing databases, content and knowledge management systems and website content.
  • Usability – ebrary’s interface was designed to overcome common PDF usability problems, such as intra-document searching, selection of columnar text, and the distinction between “logical” and physical page numbers.
ebrary’s solution is hosted and maintained on ebrary servers. It supports Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator browsers, on either Macintosh or Windows operating systems. A standalone licensed software platform will be available in late 2003.
