Online Book Database Provider ebrary® Launches New APIs for Integrating Content and Functionality

Libraries and Other Organizations can now Increase Availability and Usage with ebrary eXtend™

June 23, 2004 – Palo Alto, CA – ebrary® (www.ebrary.com), a leading provider of information distribution and retrieval services, today announced the availability of ebrary eXtend™, a free set of XML-based Web application programming interfaces (APIs) that enable libraries, eLearning companies, content aggregators, and distributors to seamlessly integrate ebrary content and functionality into their own Websites and workflow. Currently in beta, a number of ebrary customers and partners are now using eXtend including Fretwell Downing, which has integrated searching of ebrary content with its ZPORTAL federated search product, as part of the Scholars Portal Project. Other partners include Staffordshire University, ITT Technical Institutes, Special Libraries Association (SLA), MuseGlobal Inc., Cyberlibris, R.R. Bowker, and Blackwell’s Book Services.

“ebrary’s new APIs offer end-users of ZPORTAL-powered sites, such as the Scholars Portal universities, seamless searching and access to their authoritative books, maps, reports and other full-text document collections, as part of their research tool environment,” said Robin Murray , President, FD Inc.

Kate Noerr, CEO MuseGlobal, Inc., commented: “Establishing partnerships with leading e-content providers is an important part of MuseGlobal's operation. The new XML API will make it as seamless as possible to connect to ebrary’s resources and make them accessible to an ever-growing audience.”

In addition to federated searching, eXtend enables ebrary documents to be OpenURL compliant, addressing the needs of a growing number of libraries that are seeking ways to increase availability and accessibility. ebrary eXtend also allows libraries to provide remote, seamless access to ebrary content via their own library portals and Websites, eliminating barriers associated with multiple data sources and passwords.

“Since integrating ebrary content and research tools within our own Website using eXtend, we have seen a significant increase in usage,” said David Parkes, Head of Learning Support, Information Services, for Staffordshire University. “With ebrary’s new APIs, students can now access valuable book content from leading publishers and take advantage of powerful research tools from any computer, without leaving the Staffordshire site.”

Said Kathryn Closter, Corporate Librarian for ITT Educational Services, Inc.: “With ebrary's new APIs, we are able to move our users directly to their own personalized bookshelf without the need of an additional login. Our students appreciate the quick and easy access to the online collection.”

ebrary’s core business is licensing full-text book databases that feature powerful research capabilities to libraries and other institutions worldwide, under a simultaneous, multi-user access model. To-date, ebrary databases contain more than 25,000 books and 20,000 reports, maps and other authoritative documents from over 180 leading publishers. The company is continually adding content at no additional cost to customers throughout the subscription term. With eXtend, ebrary customers and partners can easily integrate ebrary content and functionality with their own interfaces, existing infrastructure and brand.

“ebrary is enabling our partners and customers to take full advantage of our content, technology and capabilities to literally embed ebrary into their own portals and Web-based services,” said Christopher Warnock, CEO of ebrary. “We expect organizations that leverage ebrary eXtend to see a higher amount of usage through better integration and thus realize a greater return on their ebrary investment.”
