ebrary Appoints John Kulka as Director of Content Acquisition
Editor and Former Barnes & Noble Executive Will Develop Online Collections

Mountain View, Calif., February 20, 2001 – ebrary™, the authoritative source for online research, today announced the appointment of John Kulka, to the position of director of content acquisition. Kulka is founding editor and series co-editor of the annual short story anthology Best New American Voices. Additionally, Kulka edited three volumes of Scribner’s Best of the Fiction Workshops. He has edited books for publishers including Simon & Schuster, Harcourt, and Barnes & Noble. Prior to his editing work, Kulka was divisional merchandise manager at Barnes & Noble, Inc. His responsibilities included managing the humanities, social science, reference, literary, and visual arts businesses for the corporate buying offices. Kulka was also accountable for all aspects of inventory management for businesses totaling $250 million in annual revenue.

“I am very excited John will join us in creating ebrary’s comprehensive online library of authoritative electronic content,” said Tom Turvey, ebrary’s vice president of content and business development. “Working with John at Barnes & Noble, I experienced firsthand his expansive knowledge of the mechanics of the publishing industry and his keen sense of selective acquisition.”

Kulka began his career at Barnes & Noble, Inc. as a buyer and was promoted to the position of senior buyer where he was charged with buying books for the company’s superstore division and coordinating major advertising and marketing campaigns. He has served as a visiting lecturer at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference in 1999, and the same year was invited by the Polish Chamber of Books to speak in Warsaw about scholarly publishing. Kulka holds a B.A. in English and philosophy from Lehigh University and an M.A. in English form Columbia University.

About ebrary
ebrary revolutionizes research on the Web by combining copyright security, full-text search, innovative reference tools and a rich collection of authoritative content. ebrary patrons can browse, view and search documents without pre-payment or subscription fees. They pay only for the convenience of copying or printing the information they need, a model analogous to that of photocopying. Publishers gain control over new digital content revenue opportunities while working with their existing print production workflow. Libraries increase their collections with the availability of electronic books, journals, and archival works while making their own unique collections accessible to more patrons.
