ebrary Announces Tom Turvey as VP of Business Development
Turvey Brings Expertise from eBook Business and Publishing to Increase ebrary’s Roster of Key Partners

Mountain View, Calif., January 22, 2001 – ebrary™, the authoritative source for online research, today announced the appointment of Thomas D. Turvey, Jr. to the position of vice president of Business Development.

Turvey came to ebrary from Barnes & Noble.com, where he was director of eBooks. His responsibilities included merchandising infrastructure, business relationships with eBook publishers and growing the eBook business with platform partners such as Microsoft, Adobe and Gemstar. Prior to taking that position, he was director of publisher relations and merchandise analysis at Barnes & Noble.com.

“Having had the opportunity to meet with every major player in the digital content space, I believe ebrary will definitively change the way people do research and buy content,” said Turvey. “Coming from a background of publishing and bookselling, I also recognize the tremendous benefits that ebrary’s business model brings to publishers, authors, consumers and libraries. ebrary has already established active working partnerships with several major publishers like Random House, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Taylor & Francis. There are literally hundreds more publishers and authors looking to take advantage of ebrary’s incredibly sensible business model for rights holders, and I’ll be working to help make those connections.”

“Turvey’s contacts in the publishing world, his track record of developing strategic partnerships, and his wealth of experience in the book business make him an invaluable addition to our executive team,” said Christopher Warnock, ebrary’s chief executive officer. “I believe our publisher relationships will grow and flourish under his leadership.”

Turvey has spent much of his recent career growing the online sales channel for books. Before joining Barnes & Noble.com, he was director of online sales & marketing at HarperCollins Publishers, where he pioneered the online bookselling channel as early as 1996. He established trading terms and relationships with Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com, Borders and many other online retailers.

Turvey was also general manager for several bookstores in Manhattan, notably business bookseller Classic Bookshop in the World Trade Center and the literary Bookberries on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. He has been a keynote speaker at major publishing gatherings, including Book Expo America, Hong Kong Book Fair, Association of American Publishers, Association of American University Presses, Children’s Book Council, eBook World and many more. He holds a B.A. in political science and an M.A. in philosophy from Oklahoma State University.

About ebrary
ebrary revolutionizes research on the Web by combining copyright security, full-text search, innovative reference tools and a rich collection of authoritative content. ebrary patrons can browse, view and search documents without pre-payment or subscription fees. They pay only for the convenience of copying or printing the information they need, a model analogous to that of photocopying. Publishers gain control over new digital content revenue opportunities while working with their existing print production workflow. Libraries increase their collections with the availability of electronic books, journals, and archival works while making their own unique collections accessible to more patrons.
