If you're having difficulty installing the ebrary Reader™ for Internet Explorer in Windows, check the following items and then try your install again.
Ensure that:
- You have administrative rights on the computer to install software. If you are using a computer at school or work, check with the computer/network administrator on site regarding this.
- That you are using a supported version of Internet Explorer. Supported browsers
include: Internet Explorer 6.x and above
Please do not use your ISP-customized version of Internet Explorer. This includes
the MSN browser and AOL browser. These customized versions often do not work well
with plug-ins because of the modifications to the program that are made when the
ISP adds in its custom tools and items. Instead, use the IE with the blue "E" icon
on your desktop/in your programs list for ebrary.
- Cookies are enabled in your browser.
- No pop-up window blocker or internet security software (such as Norton Internet
Security, McAfee Total Protection) is running during the installation. These programs
can block pop-ups, ActiveX, and cookies behind-the-scenes as part of their normal
function. If you are familiar with the configuration tools of the application,
then you can set it to allow these items from the ebrary site; site.ebrary.com
- Disable or uninstall any toolbars or search bars that may be installed on your
browser. Programs like weather tools, stock tickers, and other browser add-ons
can interfere with normal site function as well.
- You may see your Information Bar appear when you try to install the ebrary Reader;
simply click your Information Bar and choose "Install ActiveX Control".
NOTE: If you have the Information Bar turned off, then go into Tools->Internet Options
in Internet Explorer and on the Security tab, click the Internet icon and then
the button that says "Custom Level". Make sure that "Automatic Prompting for Active
X Controls" is
set to "Enable". This will merely tell the browser to prompt you for action instead
of automatically denying any ActiveX download.
- IE 7.0 has some additional features that can interfere with site function,
such as the Phishing Filter. You can either disable the filter or configure
it to recognize that site.ebrary.com is not a phishing site.
- If all else fails, check to ensure you have 3rd party add-ons enabled in IE7.0. In Internet Explorer click the menu and choose . Select the "Advanced" tab and scroll to the "Browsing" section. Choose "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)". Click OK and restart Internet Explorer.
