Question(s)/Issue(s):
ebrary Unity Reader install/opening document issues (Windows or Linux)
Solution(s):
To properly install the ebrary unity reader, please follow these steps:
- Reboot your computer.
- Delete temporary internet files/cache and cookies from your browser.
- Ensure
you have the lastest Java installed (1.6). To do this, open your Control Panels
and view the "Java" control
panel, on the "General" tab,
click the "About"
button. It is best to install Java before starting this process.
Please note if you do not have administrative rights on
your computer, you will need your IT/Computer group to install Java for you.
Linux Users - it is recommended that you use the built-in
package installer to install Java 1.6 rather than downloading from the Sun
site and installing manually.
Mac Users - Apple does not have full support for Java 1.6
yet, so unfortunately we are unable to provide the ebrary Unity Reader to Mac
users until this happens.
- Once Java is installed and/or confirmed to be the current version, visit
your ebrary site and sign in.
- Perform a search for a document. Once you click on a document;
the ebrary Unity Reader installation will initialize at this time. Please be patient,
as it will take a few seconds to initialize.
- You will be prompted with a dialog box shortly thereafter to install the
ebrary Reader. Click Install
- The EULA (End-User License Agreement) will then appear, click Accept.
- Click on a document to view. Please wait at least 15-20 seconds for the ebrary
Reader to configure and display the document. Clicking on the link again will
cause two instances of the ebrary Unity Reader to open.
Possible variations during install:
- You may be prompted to accept a publisher certificate, if that is the case,
please select "Always Trust".
- If you do not see the ebrary Reader install dialog, check behind your browser
window. (known issue to be corrected)
- If you do not see the EULA dialog, check behind your browser window. (known
issue to be corrected)
- If you forget to check your Java version and do not have the lastest installed,
the ebrary Reader will detect this and download/install it for you. Note
that if you do not have administrative rights it is highly recommended you
have Java installed first to avoid complications with install.
If you have difficulties opening the ebrary unity reader once installed,
please do the following:
- Reboot your computer.
- Locate the folder ".ebrary"
For Windows users, it will
be located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Folder
where "Your Folder" is a folder with your Windows login name
on it. Delete it and be sure to empty your recycle bin.
For Linux users,
this would be in your home directory. "rm -r" the directory.
- Start from #1 in the installation directions above and continue.
If you still have difficulties, please follow these steps:
- Perform steps 1 and 2 above, but do not continue further yet.
- Perform the same steps you did before to access the ebrary Unity Reader.
- After the failure occurs, go to this diagnostic page, and when the test is
complete, copy and paste the entire output in an email to Customer Support.
