Question(s)/Issue(s):

Since I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7, I cannot view the same secure sites, including my library's access to ebrary, because of certificate warnings. What can I do?

Solution(s):

Please note that just because Internet Explorer/Microsoft thinks the site is untrusted does not mean it is an exploit attempt. This is part of Internet Explorer 7 (and Vista's) new security settings. The same settings existed in IE6, but they were not as difficult to work around and set up manually in that version. With the concerns over Windows and security and the Internet this makes sense, but it can confuse some users who are not familiar with what a certificate is and what they should do with their settings to correct the issue.

If you try to access a secure site with Internet Explorer 7 and receive a page stating "There is a problem with this website's security certificate" and goes on to explain what that means, and gives you two links as options - "Click here to close this webpage" and "Continue to this website (not recommended)." You actually want to click "Continue to this website", then follow the instructions below.

  1. You will be returned to your webpage, but the address bar will be red in color now; and to the right of the address, you will see "Certificate Error". Click on that to bring up the error.

  2. You should see a new box that explains that the certificate is untrusted. Click the link at the bottom of this window that says "View Certificates."
  3. On this window, click the button that says "Install Certificate." The "Certificate Import Wizard" should start. Just click Next twice and Finish as shown in the series of images below.

  4. If you receive an additional warning confirming you are certain you wish to install the certificate, click Yes.
  5. Click Close on the certificate window, and you have installed the site's certificate.
