Robert Hallowell,
Former StudentInstitution Expression College for Digital Arts Location Emeryville, California ebrary just helped me land one of the coolest jobs in the world – photographer at Heavenly Ski in Tahoe!
I moved up here after graduation and working on the mountain seemed like the perfect job, especially after a few years in school. After applying and having a quick phone interview, I attended Heavenly's annual job fair – this crazy event that draws easily a couple thousand.
The days before I went, I browsed ebrary and read through a bunch of books about digital photography, DSLR, sports photography, etc. I really like how you can search broad, like "digital photography," and it suggests check-box filters for subcategories. But I think, by far, the biggest plus is the ability to access the table of contents, see sub-chapter headings, and browse the index of every book. Awesome.
Best example: I found a book called Fundamentals of Creative Photography and pulled up its contents. Chapter 2 was called 'Communication' and its last three subcategories are 'Talking about photography - technical language, artistic language, emotional language." So, within about a couple minutes of searching, I had already identified super important info for an interview.
I got to the job fair more than an hour and a half early but there were already more than a hundred in front of me. When I got in, there was a person interviewing for the job I was after; he didn't get the job. When I got up to interview, the manager had his eyes down and was finishing up paper work. After glancing up to shake my hand, he returned to his paperwork and said, "So explain to me shutter speed, aperture, f-stop, and iso." All those terms were defined in the 'technical language' section and I was able to cogently explain them and their interaction. Halfway through my explanation he put his pen down and looked up, and when I finished he said "Yeah... that's exactly it." From then on the interview had this open and understanding tone and it ended with a job offering.
It was unbelievably easy to quickly track down information that translated into a dream full-time job with great bennies. It really was serendipity that you sent ebrary my way literally days before the interview. Thanks again, lots and lots.
